What with Super Robot Wars 30 being entirely excellent, we now have another free update on the way as well as some new DLC. The latter includes the rather beefy looking Ultimate Dancouga.
Firstly, the latest Expansion Pack is released today and comes in two parts. The first part, which you can play now, offers a new special mission. The second part, available on April 20, contains a bunch of new mecha (which I will get onto in a bit), new missions, added attacks for pre-existing units and a new Super Expert Mode Plus difficulty setting. The latter is meant to be a very challenging game mode but with 10 very potent Power Parts available throughout the campaign to make it worth it.
The new mecha come from Getter Robo Devolution, Majestic Prince: Genetic Awakening, Shinkalion The Movie and more Original Generation units from the Super Robot Wars series. In addition to these series, we have some special mecha unique to Super Robot Wars 30. The first of these is a new Scopedog design by Kunio Okawara from Armored Trooper VOTOMS and the second is a new updated form of Dancouga, called Ultimate Dancouga (shown below) and designed by Masami Obari.
While these mecha are tied to specific and prior anime series, these new designs are currently unique to Super Robot Wars. This kind of thing has also happened in the past, namely with Mazinkaiser, Shin Getter Robo and the original Final Dancouga.
However, in the case of Ultimate Dancouga, this doesn’t have an anime to follow it up as yet. Moreover, with Final Dancouga that was a combination of mecha that appeared in the original TV series, namely the Black Wing and the titular Dancouga. As the Black Wing was destroyed in the anime, the combination never officially happened, so the appearance of it in Super Robot Wars was more of belated wish fulfillment than anything else.
In comparison, Ultimate Dancouga is a wholly different beast, no pun intended. In that, this is an all-new and more powerful evolution of Dancouga, so I am expecting its presence in Super Robot Wars 30 to be pretty epic.
Super Robot Wars 30 is currently available on Switch, PlayStation 4 and PC. The latest Expansion pack is available today, but all the new content won’t be fully available until April 20. The original anime of Dancouga is also widely available on Blu-ray and you can read my review of it here.
