Iain Henderson injury update as Ulster star ruled out of Grand Slam showdown

Iain Henderson will undergo surgery today and joins Garry Ringrose on the Six Nations sidelines ahead of Ireland's Grand Slam finale with England on Saturday - but Dan Sheehan, Rónan Kelleher and Caelan Doris all remain in camp.

Ringrose suffered a head injury with eight minutes remaining of the 22-7 victory over Scotland in Murrayfield yesterday and his championship is over as he recovers.

Robbie Henshaw, who came off the bench in Edinburgh to make his comeback after four months out, is expected to start in place of Ringrose as Ireland chase a fifth successive victory in this year's championship.

Henderson is to go under the knife having fractured his forearm in the first half of the bruising encounter and his championship campaign is also done, leaving Ireland without two experienced second row campaigners in the Ulster skipper and Tadhg Beirne.

Leinster's Ross Molony, who was in camp in last year's Six Nations and for the 2021 summer series, has been added to the squad, with Ryan Baird expected to come into the side as James Ryan's second row partner.

Hookers Sheehan and Rónan Kelleher both suffered shoulder injuries in the game and had to come off, which left flanker Josh van der Flier throwing into the lineout and Cian Healy coming on as hooker to prevent Ireland going down to 14 men and uncontested scrums.

Both remain in camp this week, so there must be some optimism that one or both can feature against the Red Rose. Ulster’s Tom Stewart has been brought in as cover.

Caelan Doris was the first casualty at Murrayfield and his hip complaint will also be managed in camp this week, so he has not been ruled out.

Meanwhile, England have lost centre Ollie Lawrence for the fixture.

Lawrence sustained a hamstring injury during the final quarter of Saturday’s 53-10 mauling by France - England's heaviest ever defeat at Twickenham.

Guy Porter has been drafted into a 36-man training squad as centre cover but Manu Tuilagi is also available having completed his suspension for dangerous play.
