Ulster's match with Benetton postponed amid spread of coronavirus

Ulster's match against Benetton in Treviso on Saturday has been postponed amid the spread of the coronavirus in northern Italy.

Over 200 people have been infected with the virus in Italy and five people have already died in the past 48 hours.

Benetton's Stadio Monigo is less than 20 miles from Venice in the heart of Veneto - a region under strict quarantine rules with around 50,000 people unable to enter or leave several towns for the next two weeks without special permission.

The PRO14 confirmed the decision today with Zebre Rugby Club's clash with Ospreys in Parma also called off.

A statement read: "Both fixtures set to take place in Italy this weekend have been postponed due to the restrictions enforced by national and local authorities dealing with the threat posed by the Conoravirus outbreak."

It follows the postponement on Sunday of the Scotland versus Italy fixture in the women's Six Nations.

The Ireland men's rugby team are set to welcome the Italian team to the Aviva in under two weeks' time.

But the IRFU told the Irish Mirror today: “The Ireland v Italy fixtures scheduled for the weekend of 6 (U20s) , 7 (Men) and 8 (Women) of March remain as scheduled.  The IRFU will follow government advice on such fixtures.”
