Ulster pose for unique socially distanced squad photograph ahead of season return

There’s every chance it will be a collector’s item or picture question in a sports quiz in years to come.

Ulster Rugby have released a socially distanced squad photograph ahead of the Guinness PRO14 season’s return this weekend.

The province, who last played a competitive fixture on February 22, take on Connacht behind closed doors at the Aviva Stadium this Sunday (August 23, 4.30pm).

And in keeping with the times, Dan McFarland’s players posed for a squad picture standing and sitting two yards apart.

Ulster, who need just two points from their remaining two regular season games to reach the last-four of the competition, face a busy run of fixtures on the sport’s return.

After Connacht this weekend, they meet Leinster at The Aviva on August 29, with a potential semi-final lying in wait the following week.

The Guinness Pro14 final is scheduled for September 12, with a Champions Cup quarter-final against Toulouse on September 20.

Ulster’s return to action will be behind closed doors because of Covid-19 restrictions, but head coach McFarland is confident his players will cope with the new dynamic.

“We’ve done a lot of our training and match intensity preparation inside the Kingspan Stadium which is obviously empty,” he said.

“Another aspect is that we have a little way we approach away games where we talk about taking our own atmosphere with us.

“That doesn’t rely on a Kingspan crowd or any crowd at all. If we’re going to go to play the Scarlets we don’t want to think about their atmosphere. It’s our atmosphere.

“That comes from the way the players connect on the pitch, the small chats that we have and what drives us.

“Ultimately these are games we’ve got to win. The motivation of an 18,000 Kingspan crowd helps, but we've still got to win the game.”

Ulster have been preparing over the last seven weeks at the Kingspan Stadium for the recommencement of the season in-line with the IRFU’s Return to Rugby protocols.
