Ulster Hockey planning series of events to mark 125th anniversary

Ulster Hockey will celebrate its 125th anniversary this year with a series of special commemorative events.

It was back in December 1896 that the Ulster Branch of the Irish Hockey Association was formed with North Down, Cliftonville and Antrim amongst the founding members.

To help mark that anniversary, and other milestones associated with Ulster Hockey, organisers are hoping to hold a number of events and initiatives throughout the year and into 2022.

"2021 and 2022 sees a number of milestones marking 125 years of Hockey in Ulster," Ulster Hockey said.

"The Ulster Branch of the Irish Hockey Association was formed in December 1896 with North Down, Cliftonville and Antrim amongst the founding members.

"The exact date of the formation of the Ulster Women’s Hockey Union remains unknown, the first evidence of organised ladies hockey recorded is the Ulster Shield, which was first contested in 1896 making it one of the oldest ladies competitions in the world.

"Following on from the formation of the Associations, at a special general meeting on 15 October 1897 at the Royal Avenue Hotel, Belfast, members of the association agreed to form the Ulster Senior League.

"The 1897–98 season also the introduction of the association's senior men's cup competition, the Kirk Cup.

"To celebrate 125 years of hockey, and celebrate our successes and the rich history of the sport Ulster Hockey is planning a number of events and initiatives.

"We would hope that we can involve all of our members in these celebrations and create a legacy which will ensure the next 125 years are as successful, varied and inspiring to future generations of the Ulster Hockey Family."
