Ukrainian women in Liverpool grateful for 'heartwarming' support

Ukrainian women living in Liverpool have spoken of their fears for their country - and the solidarity they have experienced in their Scouse home.

The Ukraine has been under attack by Russian forces for several days now - after Russian president Vladimir Putin announced a full scale invasion of the country.

There has been widespread condemnation for Russia's invasion across the globe, with governments uniting to sanction the Putin regime.

Across the UK, people have been showing support and solidarity for the Ukrainian people - including in Liverpool.

The Ukrainian flag is flying above St George's Hall and some of Liverpool's most prominent buildings have been lit up in the blue and yellow of Ukraine.

Those signs of support have meant a lot to two Ukrainian women who live in Liverpool.

Liverpool Council posted a video featuring Inessa and her mother Larysa, who both moved to the city from Ukraine.

In the clip, an emotional Inessa spoke of her worries for her country but how much the support in Liverpool has meant.

She said: "It's still friends there, it's still people who are my friends.

"I spent lots of years in that country and obviously I don't want anything bad to happen to it.

"I felt lots of support (in Liverpool), everybody was asking if I needed things.

"I don't really need anything - I just need to know people are on my side, on the side of people in Ukraine.

"It's heart-warming, it's nice."

The council also posted a message of support for Ukraine from Lord Mayor Cllr Mary Rasmussen.

She said: "We're proud that many Ukrainians have made their home in Liverpool.

"They and their families are all valuable members of our community.

"We know that recent events are extremely troubling for them and we want to say that we support them at this difficult time.

"Our message is one of unity, support and peace."
