All Ukrainian embassies and consulates have stepped up security measures. Mr Nikolenko quoted Ukrainian foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba as saying that “we have reason to believe that a well-planned campaign of terror and intimidation of Ukrainian embassies and consulates is taking place”.

On Wednesday an employee at the Ukrainian embassy in Madrid was lightly injured after opening a letter bomb sent to the building. He was taken to hospital for treatment but "his life is not in danger", said Ukrainian foreign ministry spokesman Oleg Nikolenko.
