Ukraine trio arrested off Dublin Airport flight after bags searched in huge sting

Three Ukrainian men have been arrested at Dublin Airport by Revenue officers over the seizure of over 47kgs of tobacco.

The huge find came about when detector dog Obi sniffed out the tobacco when their bags were searched after coming off a flight from Athens in Greece on Wednesday

The haul branded ‘Old Holborn’ has an estimated retail value of €28,000 and would have had a potential loss to the Exchequer of €23,500.

The seizures are part of Revenue's ongoing operations targeting smuggling and the sale and supply of illegal tobacco products.

A spokesman for Revenue said: "As a result of routine profiling and with the assistance of detector dog Obi, Revenue officers at Dublin Airport seized over 47kgs of tobacco following a search of the checked baggage of 3 Ukrainian men that had disembarked a flight from Athens, Greece.

"The smuggled tobacco branded ‘Old Holborn’ has an estimated retail value of €28,000 representing a potential loss to the Exchequer of €23,500."

He added: "If businesses or members of the public have any information regarding smuggling or the sale of illegal cigarettes or tobacco, they can contact Revenue in confidence on Freephone 1800 295 295."

He concluded: "No further information is available as investigations are ongoing."
