Ukraine says frontline position is the ‘strongest’ it has been in a year

  • Ukraine's foreign minister said the country's frontline position is the strongest it has been in a year, attributing this to superior drone warfare and air defence, coinciding with analysis showing Russia made minimal territorial gains in March.
  • Volodymyr Zelensky renewed calls for trilateral peace talks with Russia, and Ukraine has asked Turkey to host a meeting with Vladimir Putin, though the Kremlin maintains Putin will only meet to finalise an agreed peace deal.
  • EU ambassadors approved a €90bn loan for Ukraine and new sanctions against Russia, after Hungary lifted its veto following an agreement on oil transit via the Druzhba pipeline.
  • A Russian attack on Ukraine's railway in the Zaporizhzhia region killed a train driver and injured another, while drones also damaged infrastructure at the Black Sea port of Odesa.
  • Zelensky cautioned that Ukraine's access to US anti-missile defences could be jeopardised if the conflict in Iran prolongs, as a separate Russian air attack in Dnipro injured seven people, including two children.
