Ukraine's Billie Jean King Cup Matches Moved To Florida

Billie Jean King

Ukraine's Billie Jean King Cup matches against Romania have been relocated to Amelia Island, Florida, due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The qualifying matches are scheduled to take place on April 12-13 at the new venue. The decision to move the matches was made in light of the continued warfare in Ukraine, which has made it unsafe to host international sporting events in the country.

The Ukrainian team participating in the competition is managed by the Svitolina Foundation, led by Elina Svitolina, a highly accomplished tennis player who has reached the semifinals of three Grand Slam tournaments, including Wimbledon last year. The team was originally set to host Romania but had to change plans due to the persisting conflict that arose from Russia's invasion of Ukraine two years ago.

Notably, Ukraine was also slated to host the United States in Davis Cup qualifying matches last month, but those fixtures were relocated to Lithuania for safety reasons. The upcoming Romania vs. Ukraine matches in Amelia Island are part of a series of eight best-of-five-match contests taking place in April to determine the teams that will advance to the BJK Cup Finals in Seville, Spain, scheduled for November.
