Ukraine: Soviet-era dam destroyed near Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant
Powerful Western tanks and munitions collected over the spring by Ukraine have finally been deployed to the battlefield, bolstering Kyiv’s much-awaited counteroffensive which appears to have started this week.
Visuals from fortified positions along the frontline shared by Russian military bloggers showed at least two of the Leopard 2 tanks sent by Germany, their first such use in the war theatre.
The Leopard 2 main battle tanks were also seen in the Zaporizhzhia region where a significant Ukrainian force scaled up their assault on Russian lines in the past 24 hours.
The Ukrainian deputy defence minister Hanna Maliar said Russia was “actively on the defensive” in the Orihiv area of Zaporizhzhia region.
At least two US-produced M113 armoured personnel carriers, or APCs, were also seen in a video shared by Russian military bloggers, reported FT.com.
While reports of the beginning of the counteroffensive have been refuted by the Ukrainian defence ministry, some officials said an active phase of counterattack to push Russia back from Ukrainian territory has begun.
