Ukraine-Russia war latest: Trump ‘very disappointed’ with Putin as Kremlin accused of building up forces on frontline

US President Donald Trump said he was "very disappointed" in Russian President Vladimir Putin this evening over ongoing strikes in Ukraine.

He had hoped a meeting with the Russian leader in Alaska last month would help peace talks - but no deal or follow up meeting has been agreed since.

"I'm very disappointed in him - he knows. We have a great relationship," Trump told the Scott Jennings Radio Show.

"Very disappointed, thousands of people are dying. They're not Americans that are dying, but they're Russians and they're Ukrainians, and there are thousands."

It comes as the original September 2 deadline set by Trump for the Kremlin to reach a peace deal has passed.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia was engaged in a new troop buildup along certain sectors of the frontline and was still launching strikes on Ukrainian targets. He said Russian forces had targeted Ukraine with 150 drones overnight, more than 50 in the morning and "dozens" more in the evening.

At least 25 people were killed and 63 people, including 11 children, in a single attack by Russia last week.

A plane on which European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen was travelling was hit by GPS jamming over Bulgaria in a suspected Russian operation, a spokesperson said.

The plane landed safely at Plovdiv International Airport in the country’s south-central region on Monday.

The incident was first reported by the Financial Times, which said that Ms Von der Leyen’s plane had to circle the airport for an hour.

The commission's spokesperson Arianna Podestà said that Ms Von der Leyen would continue her planned tour of the seven European Union nations bordering Russia and Belarus.

“We can indeed confirm that there was GPS jamming,” Ms Podestà said.

France to host meeting of Ukraine's 'coalition of the willing'

France will host a meeting of the "Coalition of the Willing," a group of countries supporting Ukraine, on Thursday, the French presidency has said.

The meeting, which will be held in hybrid format, will focus on security guarantees for Ukraine and on Russia's refusal to make peace, the Elysee added.

"Following the meeting held between Europeans and Americans in Washington on August 18, the heads of state and government will discuss the work on security guarantees for Ukraine conducted in recent weeks and will take stock of the consequences of Russia's persistent refusal to make peace," President Emmanuel Macron's office said in a statement on Monday.

All Ukraine’s bold attacks on Russia after nuclear plant hit in Kursk

00:00 , Steffie Banatvala

As Ukrainians gathered to mark Independence Day across the country last Sunday, Russia accused Kyiv of launching dozens of drones at a nuclear power plant in Kursk.

The attack, which sparked a large fire and destroyed parts of the plant’s infrastructure, was one of the most audacious attacks on Russian territory so far this year.

But experts have said that Ukraine has one of the best combat-ready armies in Europe.

Zelensky provided no further details, but said "Russia continues to launch strikes. Of course, we will respond to this."

He said Russian forces had targeted Ukraine with 150 drones overnight, more than 50 in the morning and "dozens" more in the evening.

He responded that he did not see it as a challenge and that he was not concerned.

“China needs us. And I had a very good meeting with President Putin a couple of weeks ago. We’ll see if anything good comes out of it, if it doesn’t we’ll take a different stance,” he told reporters.

India’s prime minister Narendra Modi has described talks with Vladimir Putin as “insightful” after the two leaders spent about 45 minutes together in the Russian president’s armoured limousine during a regional summit in China, writes Namita Singh.

The unusual meeting took place on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in the port city of Tianjin, where Mr Modi and Mr Putin joined China’s president Xi Jinping for discussions seen as a counterweight to US influence in Asia. Photographs released from the summit showed the three leaders walking together in an apparent show of unity.

Slovakia wants to normalise relations with Russia, PM Fico says

16:30 , Steffie Banatvala

Slovakia wants to normalise its relations with Moscow and is increasing imports of Russian gas through the TurkStream pipeline, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico told Russia's President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday.

The comments clashed with the position of the European Union, which is seeking to wean itself off Russian energy imports to punish Moscow over its 2022 invasion of Ukraine, and come at a critical phase in efforts to end the conflict.

Putin says Trump administration is listening to Russia’s arguments on Ukraine war

During his visit to China, Putin claimed the Trump administration is now “listening” to Russia’s justifications for invading Ukraine, unlike the Biden administration.

Speaking after talks with Xi Jinping, he said Moscow and Washington have reached a “mutual understanding” and expressed hope for continued dialogue.

Meanwhile, Trump has threatened unspecified “severe consequences” over Russia’s lack of engagement in US-led peace efforts.

Former Ukraine parliament speaker laid to rest after assassination

16:19 , Steffie Banatvala

Ukrainians paid tribute to prominent politician Andriy Parubiy as he was buried on Tuesday after being gunned down in a daytime attack on Saturday, the second assassination in the western city of Lviv in just over a year.

As mourners streamed across cobblestone streets, the motives behind the killing of Parubiy, who played a key role in a pro-democracy uprising in 2014 that ousted a pro-Russian president, and later served as parliament speaker, remained unclear.

Ukrainian police, who have detained the alleged gunman, said on Monday they suspected Russian involvement. Moscow, which has waged a full-scale war in Ukraine since February 2022, has not commented on that claim.

Analysis: President Xi has never enjoyed such global prestige – thanks to Trump’s wrecking ball to the West

13:30 , World affairs editor, Sam Kiley

Xi’s international prestige is at an all-time high. And Trump gave it to him.

Xi could have been addressing his thoughts directly to the White House when he said, at Monday’s Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit, that the world was going through “turbulent change” and what is needed is an orderly “multipolar world”.

China, he believes, is the candidate to lead that multipolar world as first among equals, while Trump has swung a wrecking ball against the foundations of international law which underpin global security.

In the first months of his second term, the US president has attacked his own allies. He has echoed Vladimir Putin’s imperial ambitions by voicing threats against Canada and Denmark. He has also abandoned climate change and global democracy as strategic policies worth pushing.

Trump’s moves to undermine the West have not only made Xi look good - but make him more powerful.

2,000 North Korean casualties fighting for Russia in Ukraine: South Korea spy agency

08:30 , Steffie Banatvala

North Korea casualties fighting for Russia in Ukraine war have been estimated at 2,000, a South Korea spy agency reportedly said.

Kim Jong Un has heavily backed his ally Vladimir Putin in the war in Ukraine, supplying over 15,000 troops for deployment in Russia's Kursk region.

Kim Jong Un could be treated on par with Vladimir Putin in China, South Korea says

07:58 , Arpan Rai

Isolated North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is set to be treated diplomatically on a par with Russian president Vladimir Putin during their visits to China, intelligence officials in South Korea have said.

North Korea observers are paying keen attention to the way China's Xi interacts with Kim and Putin, the two aggressors in the Ukraine war. The three leaders, despite all being close allies, have never before held a trilateral meeting.

South Korea’s National Intelligence Service today said Kim will likely receive special protocol and security measures akin to those given to Putin, said Lee Seong Kweun, a lawmaker who attended the meeting.

Kim may also be seen standing alongside Xi and Putin on the rostrum in Tiananmen Square during tomorrow’s military parade, the South Korean spy agency said.

It is also anticipated that Kim will hold bilateral meetings with the Chinese and Russian leaders and interact with other heads of state at a reception and cultural performance as he seeks to further break out of isolation and expand his diplomatic footing, Lee said.

This is Kim's first visit to China since 2019 and the fifth visit to the neighbouring nation in total since he inherited power upon his father's death in late 2011.

Kim possibly meeting Xi bilaterally as well and holding trilateral meeting with Xi and Putin. The three leaders have met bilaterally previously but have yet to hold a trilateral meeting.

North Korean documentary lionises soldier suicides in Ukraine

07:35 , Arpan Rai

North Korea has released a documentary about its soldiers' exploits fighting for Russia in the Ukraine war, including accounts of soldiers blowing themselves up with grenades.

In the documentary aired on Sunday night by North Korea’s state-run Korean Central Television, two young North Korean soldiers, Yun Jong-hyuk, 20, and Woo Hi-Hyuk, 19, hugged each other and used a grenade to kill themselves after being ambushed by the Ukrainian forces. North Korean officials have labeled such battlefield suicides as “heroic sacrifices”.

Kim Jong Un has heavily backed his ally Vladimir Putin in the war in Ukraine, supplying over 15,000 troops for deployment in Russia's Kursk region.

Another episode recounted in the documentary features a 22-year-old soldier killing himself with a grenade after being wounded, “heroically” stopping his comrades from trying to save him.

Ukrainian officials have previously described North Korean soldiers using suicide as a method of avoiding being captured alive.

The documentary listed hundreds of North Korean war dead, touting their sacrifices as "the start of their bright eternal life."

Vladimir Putin claimed on Monday that the "understandings" he reached with Donald Trump during their summit in Alaska have opened a way to peace in Ukraine.

The Russian leader, who is attending the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) forum in China's Tianjin City, said he would discuss the Alaska meeting with leaders attending the summit.

Mr Putin was seen chatting and laughing with host Xi Jinping and Indian prime minister Narendra Modi at the summit. Mr Modi held the Russian leader’s hand as they walked towards Chinese president Xi, before sharing a car ride with Mr Modi to their venue for bilateral talks.

Putin's bombing campaign on Ukraine since Alaska summit with Trump

06:09 , Arpan Rai

Russian president Vladimir Putin dangled the prospect of peace in Ukraine when he met with his US counterpart Donald Trump in Alaska’s Anchorage last month.

The two met on 15 August, but did not agree a ceasefire. Instead, it was Trump who changed his tune – adopting the Russian line that a ceasefire wasn't necessary, and only a full peace agreement could end the war.

In the weeks that followed, Russia has significantly amped up its missile and drone attacks on Ukrainian cities, a development Trump's treasury secretary Scott Bessent has called "despicable".

This graph from the Institute for the Study of War shows the spike in Russian attacks after the summit between Putin and Trump.

That period includes three overnight bombardments that involved 500 or more drones plus missiles, and one of the most devastating air raids on Kyiv since the war began.

China's Xi rolls out carpet for Ukraine war aggressors Putin and Kim

05:47 , Arpan Rai

China's Xi Jinping is set to convene today with Russian leader Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un for their first trilateral gathering, while Donald Trump and other Western leaders watch from afar.

Kim and Putin will join the Chinese president to watch the massive military parade tomorrow in Beijing to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War and China's fight against Japan's wartime aggressions.

North Korea’s Kim crossed into China in the early hours today aboard his special train, en route to the capital Beijing. Xi and Putin, meanwhile, gathered at the Great Hall of the People for a meeting with Mongolia's leader expected to touch on a vast gas pipeline project and bilateral talks.

In the talks, Putin thanked his "dear friend" Xi for the warm welcome and said the close communication showed Russia's relations with China were at an "unprecedentedly high level", according to a video posted on the Kremlin's official Telegram messaging app.

"We must continue to take a clear stand against hegemonism and power politics," Xi told a gathering of more than 20 leaders of non-Western countries at a summit yesterday, in a thinly veiled swipe at his geopolitical rival across the Pacific Ocean.

The gathering of what Western analysts have dubbed the 'Axis of Upheaval' could build on a mutual defence pact signed by Russia and North Korea in June 2024, and a similar alliance between Beijing and Pyongyang, an outcome that may alter the military calculus in the Asia-Pacific region.

The union of the three leaders, two of whom are rendered global pariahs over their war efforts, underscore the Chinese president's influence over authoritarian regimes intent on redefining the Western-led global order, while Trump's isolationist stance strains long-standing US alliances.

A suspect has been arrested and an investigation is underway into the murder of Ukrainian politician Andriy Parubiy, as police suggested there may be a Russian link to the killing.

A gunman fired several shots at the former parliamentary speaker, 54, in the western city of Lviv on Saturday.

The internal affairs minister, Ihor Klymenko, said the suspect was detained in the western Khmelnytskyi region within 36 hours of the shooting, with the help of dozens of Lviv and national police officers and Security Service of Ukraine employees.

Ukrainian children forced to learn underground as new year starts in the shadow of Russian assaults

04:59 , Arpan Rai

Pupils across Ukraine returned to school on Monday, embarking on a new academic year under the shadow of Russia’s ongoing invasion, with many lessons now taking place underground.

Since the war began in February 2022, schools have innovated to keep education alive.

In Bobryk, a village in the northern Sumy region, close to the front line, one school moved its classrooms into a basement two years ago.

This drastic step was taken as air raid alerts could stretch for up to 20 hours, paralysing surface-level classes.

Principal Oleksii Korenivskyi emphasised the critical importance of their work, stating: "We must do everything so this generation is not lost. Time is the only thing you cannot make up.

“This is our future, and we must give it everything we have."

More than 300 people were evacuated from their apartments overnight following a Ukrainian drone attack on the Rostov region, Yuri Slyusar, the governor of the southern Russia region, said this morning.

"An unexploded (drone) shell was discovered in one of the apartments," Slyusar said on his official Telegram channel.

"As a precaution, 320 residents of the building are being evacuated," he said.

He said that the attack damaged several apartment buildings and sparked small fires in the region. Three people, including a child, were lightly injured, Slyusar said.

US treasury threatens new sanctions on Putin for recent attacks: 'All options on table'

04:28 , Arpan Rai

Russian president Vladimir Putin has gone back on his word at the Alaska summit with Donald Trump by increasing his “despicable” bombing campaign against Ukrainian cities, US treasury secretary Scott Bessent says.

On being asked if the Trump administration is considering new sanctions against Russia, Bessent said: “All options are on the table.”

Since that meeting in Anchorage last month, Putin has “done the opposite of following through on what he indicated he wanted to do. As a matter of fact, he has, in a despicable, despicable manner, increased the bombing campaign,” Bessent told Fox News yesterday.

“So I think with President Trump, all options are on the table, and I think we’ll be examining those very closely this week," he added.

At least 25 people were killed and 63 people, including 11 children, in a single attack by Russia last week.
