Ukraine President makes public address saying 'We must hold on, we must fight, and we shall win'

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has urged his people to hold on and fight as he made his latest public address on Sunday.

The president condemned an attack that struck close to the Polish border as he described "the 18th day of our war for life, for Ukraine, for independence".

He warned that Russia could attack NATO homes after an airstrike hit a Ukrainian military base just 25 kilometres from Poland's border.

Mr Zelensky confirmed Russia had fired 30 rockets at the Yavoriv military base in an attack that killed 35 people and injured 134 injured others.

Speaking about the attack, he said: "Nothing was happening there that could threaten the territory of the Russian Federation.

"And only 20 kilometres away are NATO borders. Last year, I made a clear warning to NATO leaders that if there were no tough preventive sanctions against Russia, it would start a war. We were right."

In the nightly address, Zelensky urged western powers to implement a no-fly zone yet again and warned that the homes of NATO citizens could be attacked next.

He said: "If you do not close our sky, it is only a matter of time before Russian missiles fall on your territory. NATO territory. On the homes of citizens of NATO countries."

However, his pleas were dismissed by the US and UK over fears shooting Russian planes down would trigger a world war.

Zelensky said he hopes to continue talks with Putin and said efforts were being made to arrange a meeting.

He said it was a "hard path, but this path is needed'.

He added that some humanitarian corridors had been successful throughout the day as Ukrainians fled the conflict but noted that Russian troops had disrupted the Mariupol corridor.

Zelensky said they would not give up, and more attempts would be made to evacuate citizens from the city safely.

He said: "But we will try again until we can help our people because they are ours. Our Mariupol. Heroic Mariupol. Ukrainians!"

Adding: "We are going through the worst ordeal in our history. In our lives.

"We protect the most precious thing we have. We must hold on. We must fight. And we will win. I know that. I believe in that."
