Comments made by US President Joe Biden over the weekend that Vladimir Putin could not remain in power are “alarming”, a spokesperson for the Russian government said on Monday.
Mr Biden made the remarks to a crowd in Poland on Saturday, but US officials were quick to row-back on them, saying they were not an accurate reflection of US foreign policy.
Asked about the comments, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said: “This is a statement that is certainly alarming.” He added: “We will continue to track the statements of the US president in the most attentive way.”
Volodymyr Zelensky has meanwhile signalled that he is willing to compromise to end Russia’s invasion of Ukraine including adopting a neutral status, with peace talks set to resume on Monday in Turkey.
The Ukrainian president said he was prepared to discuss neutrality as part of a peace deal with Russia but it would have to be guaranteed by third parties and put to a referendum.
