The Embassy of Ukraine will hold the Second Ukrainian Film Festival in Thailand at the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre from Aug 4-6, marking the 35th anniversary of Ukraine's independence. All films in the programme will be shown in Thailand for the first time.
The festival will open with a ceremony for Thai officials and members of the diplomatic corps, before continuing with free public screenings on Aug 5 and 6, open to all film lovers and the wider public.
The opening ceremony features a screening of Shadows Of Forgotten Ancestors, the 1965 film by Serhii Parajanov. Set in the Carpathian Mountains, the film follows the tragic love story of two young Hutsuls from feuding families. The film is considered one of the finest works of Ukrainian cinema, introducing generations of viewers around the world to the richness of Ukrainian cultural heritage.
For audiences attending the public screenings on Aug 5 and 6, the programme begins with Malevych (2025), a biographical drama on the life of world-famous Ukrainian avant-garde artist Kazymyr Malevych.
This will be followed by The Underground Garden (2026), a documentary about a children's art studio based in a bomb shelter in Kharkiv. This will be the special pre-release screening and the first in Asia, giving selected Thai audiences an early opportunity to discover this inspiring story.
On Aug 6, audiences can see The Stronghold (2017), a family fantasy adventure set in Kyivan Rus', and War Through The Eyes Of Animals (2025), made with the participation of Oscar-winning actor Sean Penn. The film has previously been screened in Indonesia, where it received a positive reception, and will now be shown in Bangkok.
