Ukraine manager Oleksandr Petrakov dedicates win over Scotland to 'men in trenches'

Ukraine manager Oleksandr Petrakov thanked Scotland for a memorable evening after his side emerged victorious at Hampden Park on Wednesday.

By defeating Steve Clarke's side 3-1, Ukraine march on to face Wales in Cardiff in a bid to secure a spot at this year's World Cup in Qatar.

Andriy Yarmolenko opened the scoring with Roman Yaremchuk and Artem Dovbyk also on target before Callum McGregor got one back for the Scots, reports The Daily Record.

It was a pretty convincing victory for Petrakov's side, but it was about much more than the result for the men in yellow.

The game began with a show of solidarity as Scotland fans joined the visitors in singing Ukraine's national anthem before kick-off.

And the support continued from there, with the eyes of the world watching on.

It was more than just a game for the Ukraine side who were determined to give their people at home some hope.

Ukraine's head coach explained he was left 'emotionless' after the Hampden clash.

Talking about the importance of the match, the manager said: "We did it for the men in trenches who are defending our country with their last drop of blood.

"We also have to say thanks to the warmth of this incredible country.

"Thank you Scotland, we will never forget it."

The boss went on to say: "This wasn't a win for us. It was for our country"

The winner of Sunday's play off final will join England, USA and Iran in Group B at the World Cup later this year.
