Large swaths of Ukraine are currently experiencing rolling and emergency blackouts as the country grapples with a severe energy crisis caused by Russian strikes targeting critical infrastructure. According to the CEO of the Ukrainian power grid operator, nearly half of the country's available energy capacity has been damaged or destroyed.
The CEO described the scale of destruction as unprecedented, leading to a historic low in energy generation capacity for Ukraine. This has resulted in electricity consumption limits being imposed in all regions of the country.
The restrictions are primarily due to six missile attacks on Ukrainian power plants by the enemy, causing significant damage that has hindered the plants' ability to produce electricity at previous levels. As a result, Ukraine has been forced to rely on energy imports from neighboring countries such as Poland, Romania, and Moldova.
Despite receiving emergency assistance from Poland, the CEO cautioned that these measures are insufficient to address the energy deficit caused by the destruction of critical infrastructure. The ongoing energy crisis poses a significant challenge for Ukraine as it navigates through this difficult period.
