UKIP leader Pat Mountain confused with Catherine Tate

UKIP interim leader Pat Mountain is not as immediately recognisable as Boris Johnson or Jeremy Corbyn.

But following her recent appearance on Sky News, she has reached the masses - albeit not in the intended manner.

Mountain, who will only lead Nigel Farage's former party until January 31, was interviewed by Adam Boulton ahead of UKIP's manifesto launch.

And according to the Independent, she went on to experience the political equivalent of a car crash during a totally excruciating broadcast.

Mountain, who took the reins following Dick Braine's recent resignation, performed so poorly some viewers wondered if they were watching a comedy sketch featuring award-winning actress and comedian Catherine Tate.

Ms Tate's lookalike knew very little about UKIP's election strategy other than they aren't standing against any "true Brexiteers" in the 44 seats they have selected.

Boulton immediately latched on to this, but when asked to name some of the 44 Mountain was unable to respond.

Boulton then questioned what UKIP meant by "true Brexiteers" and asked her to explain how her party differs from Farage's Brexit Party.

She said: "If we look at the Brexit Party, I don't know if it's going to be there forever. UKIP has been here forever and we are staying.

"After Brexit, what do they [the Brexit Party] actually stand for?"

Mountain then presented a copy of the UKIP manifesto, only to decline to reveal its contents prior to Friday's launch.

Boulton questioned whether UKIP was a racist party which Mountain categorically denied.

When asked how many of the party's 44 candidates are black, the interim leader was unable to answer before going on to advise they "had one 'Indian' candidate."

She concluded that Johnson's deal would not deliver a clean break from the EU and that it "wasn't Brexit at all."
