UK will give vaccine 24/7 'as soon as we can' says Prime Minister

Boris Johnson told MPs the Government will offer 24-hour vaccinations to the public “as soon as we can”.

Opening PMQs, Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer said: “I welcome news that has come out this morning about a pilot of 24/7 vaccine centres – I anticipate there is going to be huge clamour for this.

“So, can the Prime Minister tell us when will the 24/7 vaccine centres be open to the public, because I understand they are not at the moment, and when will they be rolled out across the country?”

The Prime Minister replied: “I can tell (Sir Keir) that we’ll be going to 24/7 as soon as we can and (Matt Hancock) will be setting out more about that in due course.

“As he rightly says, at the moment the limit is on supply.”

Vaccines minister Nadhim Zahawi said the NHS had built a vaccine deployment infrastructure that can handle the volume delivered by manufacturers.

On constraints on delivering the vaccine, he told the Commons Science and Technology Committee: “We’ve gone from having a challenge around the deployment of a vaccine at minus 70 degrees centigrade.

“A second vaccine coming along, only really approved and then deployed on January 4, again had to spend a couple of days in hospital deployment before you roll out into primary care.

“And so, day by day, what you’ll see is greater volumes going out.

“The NHS plan has built a deployment infrastructure that can handle the volume that the manufacturers can deliver, that’s the assurance I can give you.”

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer said he understood that pilot 24-hour centres were not yet open to the public but there would be a “huge clamour”.

Mr Hancock earlier questioned whether there would be demand for a round-the-clock vaccination operation.

He said the NHS was “absolutely up for doing that” but “most people want to get vaccinated in the daytime, and also most people who are doing the vaccinations want to give them in the daytime, but there may be circumstances in which that would help”.
