UK weather: Widespread thunderstorm alert issued by Met Office

Bristol could be battered by thunderstorms, hail and torrential rain this week.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for storms, bringing heavy rain, hail and lightning for South Gloucestershire and Bath and North East Somerset.

The warning, which comes into force at 6pm on Tuesday and runs until 9pm on Wednesday, is warning of potential disruption to travel and flash flooding.

Forecasters say the wild weather could also lead to difficult driving conditions, road closures and power cuts.

A Met Office spokesman said: “Through Tuesday evening there is potential for thunderstorms to break out, initially across parts of southern England, before developing more widely overnight and then clearing through Wednesday morning.

“ The thunderstorms may merge into areas of more prolonged and widespread rain for a time on Tuesday night and at first on Wednesday.”

Up to 15mm to 30mm of rain is expected to fall across the Bristol area as a result of the storms.

But as much as 50mm could fall at some locations.

The spokesman added: “After a drier interlude, further thunderstorms may develop in a few places during Wednesday afternoon, mainly southeastern parts of England.

“Whilst rain and flooding is likely to be the largest impact, hail, lightning and gusty winds will be additional hazards.”

The storm warning comes ahead of a more seasonal forecast for later in the week where warmer weather is expected to return to the Bristol region with temperatures climbing into the 20s.
