UK weather: Where the Met Office says thunderstorms could hit today

Experts at the Met Office say thunderstorms could hit southern areas today (Thursday, July 2).

Bristol is set to escape the worst of the weather but downpours could lash our city throughout the day.

A spokesperson said: "Cloudy across central parts with rain gradually dying out. Sunny spells with scattered heavy showers and isolated thunderstorms across southern areas.

"Mostly dry across northern areas."

It comes after Sunday was confirmed as the wettest June day on record, according to the Met Office.

There was 212.8mm (8.37in) of rain at Honister Pass in the Lake District, the equivalent of 10 weeks' rainfall in one day.

And there's bad news for drinkers planning to spend Saturday in beer gardens once pubs reopen.

Experts say heavy rain will batter large swathes of England on July 4.

Met Office spokeswoman Nicola Maxey said although the rain will lessen during Friday evening, low cloud and drizzly conditions will continue through to Sunday.

She told the PA news agency: "Saturday will see more unsettled conditions, with showers beginning in the west during the morning which will begin to move across to the east.

"While it won't be unusually wet for the time of year, some areas in the east could become particularly heavy for an hour or two in the mid-morning to early afternoon.

"Pushing in after that will be a spell of drizzly downpours and some low cloud which will hang over the UK for the rest of the day."

Between 35-50mm of rain is expected to fall.

While residents could wake to wet start in Bristol today, with 60 per cent chance of rain predicted at 8am.
