UK weather: where snow could fall as temperatures plunge

Snow is expected to fall across parts of the UK as early as tonight.

The Met Office has forecast hill snow for Scotland and parts of the north, while the south is expected to see heavy rain and strong winds.

Rain and hill snow is expected to move south across Scotland tomorrow, while rain in the south should clear.

Meteorologist Alex Deakin from the Met Office said the cold front "will have some snow on it again over hills but down to relatively low levels for a time."

As The Sun reports, rural areas will wake up to a fairly extensive frost on Thursday morning with temperatures struggling to rise throughout the day.

Friday morning will begin with a frost with showers developing throughout the day.

Starting off the weekend, a low pressure system will bring strong winds and rain across the UK.

Mr Deakin said: "A low pressure intensifying out in the Atlantic and this could be an intense one again for this time of year."

"Low pressure swinging in and the isobars pinching together telling you it's going to be windy and these weather fronts will bring rain."

There will be some sunny spells in the south, though, with the west seeing the worst of heavy rain and blustery showers.

Met Office spokesman Grahame Madge said: “This weekend the UK will experience an unseasonably strong low-pressure system.

"This will bring periods of strong winds and heavy rain, but it will also bring an area of warmer air from further south in the Atlantic, bringing a brief spell of higher temperatures, albeit temporary.”

It comes after the south of England faced the UK's coldest May bank holiday yet, with wind gusts reaching 70mph.

Weather warnings were in place for Bristol, Somerset and parts of Gloucestershire.

Bristol forecast (Thursday):

A cloudy start with outbreaks of rain fringing the south. Rain clearing into midday with sunny spells and scattered showers developing from the north. Lengthy clear spells developing through evening. Maximum temperature 13 °C.

Bristol forecast (Friday to Sunday):

Dry with sunny spells on Friday. Turning windy with outbreaks of rain, heavy and persistent at times on Saturday. Scattered heavy showers with sunny spells between on Sunday.
