UK weather: Weekend temperatures set to hit 23C but showers dampen hopes of heatwave

Brits waiting for the return of a scorching summer heatwave will have to wait a little longer if this weekend's forecast is anything to go by.

While temperatures will reach highs of 23C on Saturday and Sunday, the country will see a mix of sunshine and showers.

The mercury in the north of the country will struggle to get above 17C despite the time of year, the Met Office says, and Wales and the south west will see cloud and run for much of the weekend.

It kicks into touch hopes for a mid August heatwave, and while the conditions in the week ahead look better temperatures are still stuck in the early 20s.

Met Office forecaster Aiden McGivern said: "A dull and gloomy start to Saturday for Wales and the south west.

"Increasingly that low cloud will creep it's way north eastwards into parts of the midlands and northern England, carrying with it some outbreaks of mainly light rain and drizzle.

"Otherwise sunshine will be coming through for southern and eastern counties of England, and for Scotland and Northern Ireland there are a few showers around but fewer compared to Friday."

The highest temperatures are expected in the London area and south East England, of around 23C on both Saturday and Sunday.

The north of England and Wales will see drizzle and cloud on Sunday with showers elsewhere in the country too.

The wet weather is expected to clear up next week but cloud skies are forecast for Monday to Thursday.

Temperatures will again be highest in the south east, but peaking at 21C on Monday and Tuesday.

MET OFFICE OUTLOOK

Today:

Further showers across Scotland, though becoming less frequent with winds gradually easing. Cloud in the southwest spreading north with some rain at times, particularly for high ground of Wales. Eastern parts seeing best shelter with some sun, feeling warm here.

Tonight:

A little rain for many, particularly northern England, southern parts of Northern Ireland and later north Scotland. Some clear spells and dry for most of southern Scotland and southeast England.

Sunday:

Rain or showers for many parts but these mostly light. Best of the shelter over southeast England, East Anglia and south Scotland where mostly dry with some sunshine.

Outlook for Monday to Wednesday:

Sunny spells and mostly dry Monday, but with thicker cloud and patchy rain from the northwest later. Often cloudy Tuesday and Wednesday, some rain in places but many areas dry.
