UK weather: Weekend chill with -3C lows while Britain battles coronavirus

It’s going to be a chilly weekend with temperatures as as low as -3C while millions of Brits stay indoors to fight the coronavirus pandemic.

Sub-zero temperatures overnight will mean parts of the country are set to wake up to frost, especially those living in rural areas.

The mercury will struggle to get into double figures for much of the weekend.

But despite the relatively low temperatures, today will also bring clear skies and some sunshine, the Met Office says.

Most of the country will stay dry, with showers in the northeast and clouds across the southwest easing off overnight.

Temperatures will reach a high of 11C mid-afternoon in London, Cardiff and the southwest.

Glasgow meanwhile is set to get to 10C and while Birmingham and Belfast will reach 9C.

However, millions of Brits will be unable to take advantage of the dry conditions as they stay indoors or self isolate.

People across the UK have been urged not to leave their homes unless necessary in a bid to reduce the spread of the potentially deadly flu-like coronavirus.

Giving the latest forecast, Met Office meteorologist Clare Nasir said: “Wherever you are, though, it’s going to be a dry start to Saturday morning with some sunshine.

“The cloud which has plagued southern counties will ease and clear off the scene overnight Friday into Saturday.

“So a cold start to Saturday morning, but it will dawn bright with some sunshine and it will change through the day.

“Later on more cloud towards Northern Ireland and western Scotland and that will make the sunshine rather hazy through the afternoon.”

The frost is due to return overnight on Saturday, meaning the country is in for another bright but cold start to Mother’s Day on Sunday.

Next week, meanwhile, will once again bring rain and strong winds.

This will start in the northwest on Monday, and gradually move southeast and arrive in central areas by Wednesday.

MET OFFICE OUTLOOK

Today

Early showers in the northeast dying out, whilst cloud across the southwest slowly clears. Most parts dry with plenty of sunshine, though feeling chilly in places exposed to the keen easterly wind.

Tonight

Some cloud and patchy rain affecting the far northwest, else dry with clear skies across most parts. Turning chilly, with a frost in places. Remaining breezy in the south.

Sunday

Cloud and patchy light rain in the far northwest soon clearing, else dry and sunny across most parts. Brisk easterly winds persisting in the south, but feeling warm in shelter.

Outlook for Monday to Wednesday

Rain and strong winds developing in the northwest on Monday moving slowly southeast to reach central areas by Wednesday. Otherwise dry and bright with overnight frost.
