UK weather: Week of thunderstorms spells misery for millions from hay fever pollen bomb

More hail and thunder will hit the UK today as a week of storms shows no sign of letting up.

And the relentless rain could spell misery for the country's estimated 16 million hay fever sufferers.

Across the country there will be high levels of tree pollen circulating - especially in the south of England.

The Met Office has warned hay fever sufferers that prolonged heavy rain can also cause pollen levels to soar as well as warm weather.

The experts said pollen levels can be high even after rain, explaining: "During a thunderstorm¸ high humidity can split pollen grains, releasing a higher density of pollen into the surrounding air.

The weather is set to be turbulent with frequent rain showers all weel (PA)

"Any rainfall causes a marked decrease in pollen concentration in the air, but the time and amount that it rains during the day is very important.

In the East of England high pollen is expected until at least Thursday, while London and the South East are set to be blighted until the weekend.

Hay fever sufferers in the North West will see some relief, however, as pollen levels will fall as the week progresses.
