UK weather: Warnings issued as up to 20cm of snow could fall in coming days

More travel chaos is expected as two new weather warnings have been issued for snow, ice and wind today (Tuesday).

The Met Office's alerts cover the northwest, parts of the northeast, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Experts are warning of slippery ice and travel delays as snow is set to fall around the north of the UK from today until noon on Wednesday,

Heavy snow showers and icy surfaces are predicated for areas including Manchester, Lancaster and Glasgow, reports the Mirror.

Forecasters say some areas could see blizzards and a build-up of up to 20cm of snow over the next day.

It comes after Storm Ciara caused severe travel disruption in Bristol with long delays on our roads and many flights from Bristol Airport being diverted.

At least two deaths have already been attributed to the storm.

A 77-year-old man is reported to have died just before 11am today in Clydebank, West Dunbartonshire after he fell and banged his head during icy weather.

The first reported death occurred during powerful winds on Sunday afternoon in Hampshire, when a driver was killed by a tree falling on his car.

The 58-year-old man was driving from Winchester to his home in Micheldever, Hants, when the tree came down.

It should be a lot drier in Bristol today with only 10 per cent chance of rain in the morning. It will still be pretty chilly with feels like temperatures of just 2C throughout the day. And wind speeds will peak at around 40 mph.

UK weather forecast

Tuesday:

Sunny intervals and blustery showers of rain, hail, sleet and snow, even in some southern areas but the worst of the snow for hills further north. Cold, windy and gusty.

Outlook for Wednesday to Friday:

Wintry showers and strong winds clearing Wednesday as cloud and rain spreads from the southwest Thursday with hill snow. Frosty start Friday, then further rain and strong winds, showery later.
