UK weather: Warnings issued as thunderstorm and torrential rain set to batter country

Violent thunderstorms will strike across most of England this week as more alerts for heavy rain have been issued.

Last week saw two months worth of rain fall in just two days in some parts, and it looks like the weather isn't going to improve anytime soon.

Forecasters say more flooding is possible in parts of eastern and southern England on Tuesday and Wednesday, when yellow weather warnings have been issued for an area that reaches just outside Bristol and includes some of South Gloucestershire.

A spokesperson for the Met Office said: "Thunderstorms may develop bringing torrential rain, hail and lightning to a few places, with potential disruption to travel and flooding.

"There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds.

"Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services.

"Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures.

"There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost."

Wainfleet All Saints, Lincolnshire, has already been ravaged by flooding this week.

Other areas in the Midlands and East of England have also been hit.

In June, the entire UK typically averages around 62 millimetres (2.4 inches) of rain.

But more than 60mm fell on Monday alone in some parts.

It led to the Met Office issuing a rare "risk to life" warning for London and the southeast.

The unseasonable weather ruined music festivals and sporting fixtures this week.

Met office Five Day Forecast:

Monday:

Showery in Scotland and Northern Ireland, with a risk of hail and thunder. Early rain across northern England and Wales breaking up into showers. Warm sunny spells further southeast.

Outlook for Tuesday to Thursday:

Less showery in the north on Tuesday. Elsewhere, warm hazy sunshine giving way to thundery showers in the south, moving northeast into Wednesday. Brighter with more showers on Thursday.
