UK weather: Warnings issued as rain and gales set to lash the country for the next three days

Torrential rain and gale force winds are set to batter the UK - including Bristol - for the next three days.

Yellow weather warnings for rain are in place for most of the south west, south Wales and north west today (Friday).

Experts at the Met Office say more flooding is likely and there could be travel chaos on our roads and trains.

The alert is in place for all of Friday until 6am on Saturday and will lash Bristol during today's youth strikes when Greta Thunberg will be in the city.

Another yellow weather warning for wind is in place for most of the country - including Bristol - on Sunday until noon.

Meteorologist Alex Burkill said: "There's going to be a fair bit of rainfall mixed in with it.

"It's not going to be large amounts, between 10-15mm of rain in some places, but it could be falling on heavily saturated areas."

Flooding along parts of the River Severn, which remained close to its highest levels in some areas, is likely until at least Sunday, the Environment Agency said.

England has received over 200 per cent of its average February rainfall, according to the Environment Agency, with some areas experiencing a month's worth of rain in 24 hours.

Toby Willison, executive director of operations at the Environment Agency, said: "Our operational teams continue to work night and day to protect communities alongside the River Severn, which is experiencing record levels.

"River levels will remain exceptionally high on the Severn for some time and communities, in particular Shrewsbury, Bewdley, Bridgnorth and Ironbridge, should prepare for potentially ongoing severe flooding."

It's set to be extremely wet in Bristol on Friday, when there is 90 per cent chance of rain throughout the day.

Strong gusts are also set to batter the city for most of the day with wind speeds peaking at 37 mph.

But it will feel unseasonably warm with temperatures hitting 12C.

UK weather forecast

Friday:

Wet and windy weather in the southwest moving northeastwards across most parts. Rain heavy at times, and preceded by some snow in the north. Turning milder from the southwest.

Outlook for Saturday to Monday:

Remaining unsettled with spells of rain, strong winds and some hill snow; but turning increasingly showery through Sunday and Monday as winds slowly ease. Rather cold with overnight frosts.
