UK weather: Warnings for snow and ice as deep freeze moves south

Snow and ice warnings are in place for most of the UK today (Thursday) as the deep freeze moves further south.

The yellow weather alert warns there could be travel disruption to rail, road and buses as well as dangers of hazardous icy conditions.

In south Wales, up to 5cm of snow could fall - while 3cm is possible on The Chilterns, Cotswolds and hills across the Midlands.

The severe weather is expected to linger for most of the morning, with the warnings in place until noon.

It comes after the Met Office confirmed that England has seen more than 200% of its average February rainfal, reports the Mirror.

The Met Office has warned of further showers across the UK on Friday and Saturday when two weather warnings for rain are in place for parts of Wales and the north west of England.

Experts at the authority have warned further flooding could hit homes and businesses in the affected areas.

Residents should wake up to a wet start today in Bristol, with 80 per cent chance of rain from 7am.

But by the afternoon sunny spells will break through the cloud. Temperatures will peak at 7C.

UK weather forecast

Thursday:

Rain, sleet and snow clearing southeastwards then all parts seeing sunny spells and wintry showers. Showers heaviest and most frequent in the northwest. Driest in the south and east.

Outlook for Friday to Sunday:

Following overnight frost, rain spreading northeast on Friday, clearing eastwards on Saturday to brighter, showery conditions. More rain in places on Sunday. Windy over the weekend, with gales at times.
