UK weather: Warning of flooding as heavy rain set to lash country

Summer is well and truly behind us as heavy rain is expected to cause flooding for large parts of the UK over the next few days.

A yellow weather warning is in place for south-west Scotland from noon today (Friday) until the same time on Saturday.

Flooding of homes and businesses is 'likely, according to the Met Office.

And an autumn breeze can now be felt in the air as the mercury dives to the low teens.

The Met Office warning states: "A period of heavy and persistent rain is expected to affect southwest Scotland through Friday afternoon and into Saturday morning.

"Accumulations of 30-50mm are expected quite widely with isolated accumulations of 100mm possible over the hills of Dumfries and Galloway.

"There is some uncertainty in the northern and southern extent of the heaviest rain with Dumfries and Galloway considered most likely to see some impacts."

Disruption to bus and train services in the area is also expected, with drivers being urged to take care on the roads, according to our sister paper the Mirror.

Heavy rain will lash nearly all of Scotland and Northern Ireland on Friday, with sunshine in south and south-east England.

Bristol will escape the worst of it, with sunny spells and highs of 22C expected throughout today.

The wet  weather  will continue on Saturday morning, with Wales and north-west england also set to get drenched.

However, the downpours will make way for sunshine and light showers in the afternoon.

Things were relatively chilly overnight, dropping to a low of 8C in south-west England in the early hours of this morning.

Despite this, temperatures should not drop below 10C anywhere in the country over the next few days.

Met Office forecast

Friday:

The north will see wind and rain on Friday, this heavy and persistent in the west. Dry elsewhere with sunny spells, the best which will be in the southeast.

Outlook for Saturday to Monday:

Windy on Saturday with a band of rain clearing to showers and cooler conditions. Sunny spells and heavy, blustery showers on Sunday. Most places dry on Monday with sunny spells.
