UK weather: Warning as thunderstorms set to follow hottest weekend of the year so far

The Met Office has warned that significant thunderstorms are expected to hit parts of the UK in the wake of the hottest weekend of the year so far.

A yellow weather warning came into effect at 8pm on Sunday, lasting until 5am today.

Flash floods could even wreak havoc in the south of England, before a mini-heatwave sets in across the country thanks to a plume of heat headed our way from North Africa.

Forecasters predict the mercury could rise to 26C in the middle of the week, but first Britons should brace themselves for a dull, wet and gloomy 24 hour period.

A statement from the Met Office said: "Although the locations affected by thunderstorms remains uncertain, a few places may experience a combination of heavy rain, frequent lightning and hail during Sunday night.

"There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes or hail.

"Should thunderstorms develop, they are likely to move north from the south coast during Sunday evening into parts of south Wales, southern England and East Anglia overnight before gradually weakening during Monday morning.

"Whilst some places will remain dry, a few places may see 20-30 mm of rain fall in less than an hour, with frequent lightning and hail additional hazards."

Met Office five day weather forecast

Monday

Rain, heavy in places with a risk of thunder across central areas continuing north, followed by sunny spells and a few heavy showers. Fine end to the day across many central and southern areas. Warm in the sunshine.

Monday night

Most places becoming dry with clear periods and patchy mist later. Low cloud and rain or drizzle in far north. Cloud, occasional rain and stronger winds into far west later.

Tuesday

Dry and very warm in sunny spells across many central and eastern parts. Cloudier in the west with rain turning heavy, edging into central parts into the evening.

Wednesday to Friday

Dry and sunny much of Wednesday before heavy rain spreads from the west and south later. This clears early Thursday leaving behind sunny spells, before further rain in places Friday.
