UK weather warning as Met Office issues thunderstorm alert for most of England

If you're still holding out hope for an August heatwave you might want to look away now.

A yellow weather warning for thunderstorms has been issued for most of England on Saturday.

Forecasters are warning torrential downpours could lead to flooding and cause problems on the roads.

The warning covers pretty much the whole of England apart from the south east and some parts of the far south west.

It kicks in at noon and runs until 10pm - so if you're planning a day out tomorrow you might want to pack a cagoule.

But the good news is many places will miss the worst and temperatures remain mild.

The Met Office forecast says: "Many places missing the worst, but heavy showers and thunderstorms may cause some transport disruption and perhaps flooding.

"Following rain overnight and during the morning, heavier showers and thunderstorms are likely to break out by late morning.

"These becoming more widespread into the afternoon, with torrential downpours possible in a few places, bringing around 20 mm of rain in less than an hour and 30-40 mm in a couple of hours.

"Lightning and hail may prove additional hazards in some locations."

What is the Greater Manchester weather forecast?

It's a mixed picture for the weekend here in Greater Manchester.

There could be some drizzle later on Friday with conditions forecast to get breezy.

Maximum temperatures will be 21°C.

Tonight it will be cloudy with rain, turning heavier and more persistent through the evening and into the night. Minimum temperature 15°C.

Saturday

It's a wet start to tomorrow with rainy conditions persisting through the day.

The heaviest rain is expected through the afternoon, when the thunderstorm warning will also be in place.

Maximum temperature 19 °C.

Sunday to Tuesday

It's forecast to get a drier through Sunday, with sunny spells possible between showers.

And the Met Office says the start of next week will be much more settled, with dry conditions and sunny spells, feeling warm in any sunshine.
