UK weather: Up to 10cm of snow to spark travel chaos with severe flood warnings issued

Dozens of flood warnings are in place after forecasters warned of more freezing temperatures and up to 10cm of snow set to fall today.

And there are further warnings that more torrential rain is set to lash the country in the coming days, as 32 flood warnings - meaning 'immediate action' is needed - remain in place.

It comes after the UK saw what forecasters called the "snowiest spell" in two years, when 20 weather stations in England recorded accumulations of 5cm or more for three days consecutively.

Weather warnings for snow and ice are in place across all four nations today, just days after vast swathes of the already storm-battered country was blanketed in snow.

In parts of England and Wales the Met Office is warning of injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces, as well as icy patches on untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths.

The yellow warning for snow is until 10am this morning.

Elsewhere, in parts of northern England and Scotland hill snow will develop during the late morning and into the afternoon.

Forecasters said that up to 10cm of snow could fall in higher areas with a warning in place from 11am this morning until midnight.

The Met Office said that roads and railways could be affected with longer journey times by road, bus and train services due to the hill snow.

In Northern Ireland a warning for ice is in effect until 10am this morning.

The Environment Agency currently has 32 flood warnings - meaning 'immediate action' is needed - as well as 54 less severe flood alerts.

Forecaster Oli Claydon said that more heavy rain as well as 40mph winds were likely to batter the south west of England and Wales from tomorrow, with the bad weather moving east into Thursday.

He said: "Everywhere will likely see rain over the next week, as it moves west to east. Weather systems will pass over pretty much everywhere over the UK."

Yesterday, there was more snowfall recorded and Loch Glascarnoch in the Scottish Highlands saw the highest accumulation of snow, with 17cm (6.7 inches) at 6am on Monday.

It was closely followed by the village of Wittering in Cambridgeshire, which woke up to some 15cm, while 8cm fell in Coleshill, Warwickshire.

By contrast, just 2cm was recorded at Heathrow in west London, and 5cm in the village of Shawbury in Shropshire.

Today:

Early cloud, rain and hill snow over Northern Ireland, Wales and southwest England moving eastwards. Rain then stalling over south and central Scotland later with some snow accumulations for hills. Feeling cold for many but turning milder in the west.

Tonight:

Most persistent rain clearing eastwards leaving a fairly cloudy night with some light rain and drizzle. Less cold for many than recent nights. North Scotland drier and colder.

Wednesday:

Mostly cloudy with some light rain and drizzle. More widespread rain arriving from the southwest during the afternoon. N Scotland colder and drier but snow showers for Shetland.
