UK weather: Unsettled conditions as heatwave comes to an abrupt end

Most of the UK should be remain dry today following yesterday's torrential downpours - but be warned there's more rain on the way.

Experts are predicting sunny spells for large parts of the country throughout Thursday (August 28) but more wet weather will move in by the weekend.

According to Met Office forecasters, portions of Northern Ireland and western Scotland will experience showers today.

Temperature highs are expected to remain in the low 20s this weekend, before dropping into the high teens next week.

In Bristol, sunny spells should linger for most of Thursday but there will be cloudy periods.

By the weekend the mercury will drop to around 17C - more than 10C cooler than last Saturday.

A Met Office spokesperson said: "Thursday will start off dry and sunny. It will become breezier in the afternoon and some cloud will develop.

"The odd shower is possible but most areas will stay dry. Maximum temperature 20 °C.

"Friday will be breezy and dry with sunny spells. Rain on Saturday will clear to leave cooler air, and sunshine and showers for Sunday."
