UK weather: Two storms in one week with 50mph gale force winds and torrential rain

The first two storms of the autumn are set to strike this week with 50mph gale force winds and torrential rain for many.

Blustery winds will begin to batter parts of northern Scotland from Monday before storms began to form, striking the country from Wednesday.

Forecasters have warned the wet and windy weather will see ferocious winds of up to 50mph by the middle of the week.

It will also bring with it torrential downpours up to the weekend.

Met Office forecaster Marco Petagna said: "It looks more autumnal after a settled start to the week.

"Forecast models show potentially very blustery and wet conditions on Thursday, in particular for the North and East, with another wet and windy episode at the weekend."

Ex-BBC and Met Office forecaster John Hammond of weathertrending said: "The weather is about to change gear, turning cooler, wetter and windier."

A Met Office forecaster added: "It turns more unsettled and potentially windy with rain from Tuesday onwards.

"Thursday and Friday look like seeing much of the UK receiving windy conditions and showers or rain, with coastal gales likely in the North-West.

"More strong winds and outbreaks of rain are expected from the weekend onwards in the North-West."

On Monday forecasters have warned that many areas of the UK will be hit by 'scattered showers' throughout the day, before drier conditions return by the evening.

Temperatures will remain cooler than in recent weeks and large swathes of the nation will only hit highs in the upper-teens.

The south coast will see the warmest weather and there are expected to be high temperatures of about 21C in southern England.

And the picture is expected to be similar on Tuesday, but with drier weather for most parts.

Currently the Environment Agency has one flood alert in place for England, meaning flooding is possible and residents should be prepared.

That alert is in place for the River Burn between Southgate and Waterden to Burnham Thorpe.

It comes after large parts of the UK were drenched in a 12-hour deluge on Sunday amid a Met Office yellow weather warning for rain.

The east of the country was lashed by the torrential downpours, all the way from Newcastle upon Tyne in the north down to Brighton in the south.

The heavy showers battered the affected regions from about midday until midnight before easing early on Monday.

Other parts of the country saw drier conditions but temperatures have continued to struggle to get out of the teens.

Today:

Dry with warm sunny spells for most after early fog patches clear by mid-morning. Scattered showers across southeast England; and patchy rain spreading across some northwest, especially west and north of Scotland. Windy in the far north.

Tonight:

Cloud and patchy light rain sinking southeast into central Britain but still plenty of dry weather with clear spells and some fog patches.

Tuesday:

Variable cloud with warm sunny spells for most. Some early fog patches clearing by mid-morning. Thicker cloud and outbreaks of rain reaching the far northwest accompanied by coastal gales.
