UK weather: Tuesday set to be hottest day of the year so far as temperatures reach 25C

Tuesday could be the hottest day of the year so far – with temperatures set to reach 25C in parts of the country – the Met Office has said.

It comes after Sunday broke Saturday’s record, with Plymouth seeing 24.4C.

Forecasters are expecting temperatures to reach 25C in “one of two spots … most likely across West Scotland” on Tuesday, Met Office meteorologist Dan Stroud said.

He said: “But after that we’re expecting temperatures just to subside just a little as we move forward towards the middle and end of the week.”

Mr Stroud said temperatures will remain “generally above average” but not meet “heatwave criteria”.

He said: “We’ve got high pressure sending across at the moment, which is bringing dry and settled weather and some late spring, early summer sunshine.

“We’re expecting similar conditions for the rest of the week and into next weekend and probably beyond. So an extended spell of dry and settled weather.”

Mr Stroud said May has been “very dry” and with “just slightly more than half the normal amount of rainfall we would actually expect”.

A spell of hot weather only becomes a heatwave if temperatures top 25C on three successive days.

UK 5 day weather forecast

Today

Early cloud will become increasingly confined to the far north and east, where it will feel cool. Otherwise it will be dry with plenty of warm sunshine. Breezy across the far north and across some southern areas.

Remaining cloudy in the far north, and cloud spreading from the North Sea into many eastern, central and southern areas, giving patchy drizzle. Clearer elsewhere. Patchy frost in the north.

Wednesday

Low cloud breaking to give sunny spells for many, and becoming warm in the west. Remaining cloudier and cooler though in the far north and across North Sea coastal counties.

Thursday to Saturday

High pressure will maintain largely fine weather. The west will be warmest and sunniest, with low cloud overnight becoming mainly confined towards the far north and east by day.
