UK weather: Towns bolster flood defences ready for heavy downpours

Large areas of the country were bolstering their defences on Monday ahead of expected flooding, which may cause yet more travel disruption.

Almost 30 flood warnings have been issued by the Environment Agency in England, while more than 100 flood alerts are in force across the UK.

Land, roads and buildings may be flooded, and travel may be impacted, the Environment Agency warned.

It comes after prolonged strikes and flooding over New Year caused severe disruption to train travellers.

The 29 flood warnings currently in force are concentrated in the east and south-east of England.

The Met Office has also issued two yellow warnings for rain in the North East and across Wales and Shropshire.

Flood barriers have been put up in Ironbridge in Shropshire and Bewdley in Worcestershire, in an attempt to stop the River Severn bursting its banks.

Barriers were also put up last week in Shrewsbury.

“Frequent and sometimes persistent bands of rain across Wales and the Upper Severn area have resulted in saturated and full catchments, raising river levels along the Severn,” a spokesperson for the Environment Agency said.

These levels of rain are not uncommon for this time of year, they said, adding that more rain is forecast for the week ahead.

Rivers may flood in Sussex on Tuesday and Wednesday, and in the South East on Tuesday and Thursday, the agency said.

“On Tuesday, local river and surface water flooding impacts are probable in parts of North West and and the Midlands, and possible more widely due to widespread heavy rain,” it said in a forecast.

The impact may continue in the West Midlands and parts of the North East until Friday.

No flooding is expected in Scotland in the next three days, the Scottish Environment Protection Agency said, but there may be some limited surface water in the West and South West.

There is a risk of flooding across almost all of Wales on Tuesday, according to Natural Resources Wales.

Met Office yellow warnings for rain are in force from 6am until 8pm on Tuesday in both Wales and the North East.

Some homes and businesses are likely to be flooding, and there may be interruption to power supplies, the Met Office said.

The rain may also cause travel disruption, including delays to buses and trains.
