UK weather: Torrential rain and strong gusts set to batter country once again this week

This weekend's severe weather forced organisers to cancel most of Bristol Balloon Fiesta 2019's mass ascents as strong gusts and heavy rain battered the city.

Sadly, forecasters are predicting a similar picture for the week ahead, with downpours likely to cause travel disruption and see events being closed.

Experts say another Atlantic weather front is racing towards the UK, with a heavy band of severe rain and wind likely to sweep across the country by Wednesday.

Monday will see a mixture of sunny spells and scattered showers. The rain will be the heaviest in the northwest, but also across southeast England.

In Bristol,  it's likely to remain dry throughout the day and there's even a chance of blue skies and warm sunshine from 12pm.

More unsettled conditions will move in on Tuesday across most of the country, before longer spells of rain arrive on Wednesday.

Here's the Met Office's UK forecast:

Monday:

Early rain dying out over northern England. Elsewhere, a mixture of sunny spells and scattered showers. The showers heaviest in the northwest, but also across southeast England at first. Cooler.

Outlook for Tuesday to Thursday:

Staying unsettled, with sunny spells and showers on most days. Some longer spells of rain are likely on Wednesday, especially in the south. Temperatures staying a little below normal.
