UK weather: Thunderstorms to bring mini-heatwave to a soggy and dramatic end

A plume of warm air from eastern Europe could trigger thunderstorms across England over the coming days.

Thunder, lightning and heavy downpours may spell a soggy end to what has been a gloriously sunny and warm Saturday for most.

After a plume of hot air rises up from eastern Europe, which is currently enjoying a run of days in which the temperature is in high 20s, it will be drawn in by the low pressure hanging over the English Channel.

This will create the right conditions for thunderstorms to break out in parts of the UK.

Over the coming three days other parts of the country may also see the rejuvenated summer come to a juddering halt.

While thunderstorms are difficult to predict, warmer areas such as the south east and south west of England are prime locations.

Martin Bowles, operational meteorologist at the Met Office, said: "In the short term we're expecting some thunderstorms, this evening potentially.

"While we have humid air coming from eastern Europe there's a good chance of there being thunderstorms over the next few days.

"It's hard to tell exactly where in the UK though."

The beginning of the weekend has seen pleasant weather for most people across the UK.

Tomorrow is likely to start dry and bright in most parts of the UK.

However, showers in Wales and south-west England will creep in as the day goes on.

In eastern Scotland and north-east England it will be cloudy with patchy rain in the afternnon.

For possibly a second night running heavy, thundery showers will develop later, especially in Northern Ireland, Wales and western England.

Eastern Scotland and coastal parts of north-east England will avoid the worst of it tomorrow, although they will remain cloudy with a few spots of rain.

Through the night, mist patches may develop.

Monday will bring more bright weather punctuated by the occasional shower for most people in England.

Scotland and north-east England will be overcast with a few spots of rain or drizzle.

As with the weekend, the threat of thunderstorms will loom larger as the day goes on.
