UK weather: Thunderstorms and heavy rain warning with risk of lightning and floods

Thunderstorms, lightning and floods threaten to hit parts of the UK after Brits finally enjoyed a mini heatwave.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for the East Midlands from around 3pm to 6pm this afternoon.

Clusters of heavy showers and thunderstorms have developed and will affect the area over the next few hours, giving rise to some very localised areas of torrential rain, lightning, hail and gusty winds, it said.

Forecasters have warned spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures.

There is a slight chance of power cuts and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost.

Homes and businesses are also at risk of being flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds.

So far, no further warnings have been issued for the rest of the week.

Dry and sunny conditions will return on Tuesday for most areas in the UK, although cloudy skies are forecast across Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Temperatures on Tuesday are expected to peak at 25C around London.

The warning comes after reports Britain could be basking in the sun for a further 10 days at least - with reports of a new heatwave on the way.

The Met Office's long-term forecast up to June 20 reveals that there is "an increased risk of hot conditions".

It adds that temperatures will "trend towards the warmer side of average" - signalling a potentially balmy month for Brits.

The mercury is expected to remain above 20Cs all week in many places, with sunshine forecast for most.

London will see highs of 26C - making it hotter than Barcelona, Nice and St. Lucia.
