UK weather: Thunderstorms and heavy rain expected to lash country

Large parts of the UK will be battered by torrential rain, strong gusts and thunderstorms today (September 4).

Rainfall is expected to lash south-east England - and the afternoon could bring thunderstorms to the north of the country.

Experts are also predicting gale force winds, with gusts of up to 43 miles-per-hour in areas of Scotland.

Bristol will escape the worst of the weather, with highs of 18C and lots of sunshine predicted throughout the day.

Thursday is set to be cloudy for most with rain in western Scotland, although it should be bright at times in southern England, according to our sister paper The Mirror.

Friday will start cloudy with outbreaks of rain for most and become bright later on.

Temperatures throughout the week will be Autumn-like and are unlikely to rise above the high teens.

Met Office weather forecast

Wednesday:

Areas of rain and local gales will cross the north, followed by heavy, possibly thundery showers. Elsewhere, early rain in the southeast soon clears leaving sunny spells and isolated showers.

Outlook for Thursday to Saturday:

Thursday and Friday changeable with spells of cloud and rain, and stronger winds, interspersed by periods of sunny spells and some showers. Drier for most on Saturday. Some chilly nights.
