UK weather: Thunderstorm warnings issued as 'flaming wet' June predicted

Large swathes of the UK will be battered with downpours, hail, strong winds and lightning today (Wednesday).

Four yellow weather warnings for thunderstorms covering Bristol, Manchester, Birmingham and Wales have been issued today.

The Met Office's alerts, which are in place until 9pm, read: "There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds

"There is a small chance of fast flowing or deep floodwater causing danger to life

"Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus service.

"Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closure."

And an expert at The Weather Outlook has predicted more downpours could be on the way throughout this month.

Brian Gaze, founder of forecaster The Weather Outlook, told Blowing Hot and Cold videochat: "June looks more flaming wet than flaming hot this year.

"The 'European monsoon' is seeing westerly winds return, bringing rain, after being absent for much of a very dry spring."

Bristol's weather warning is in place between noon to 9pm. The worst downpours are expected around lunchtime.

Rain is likely to linger for most of the afternoon but it will still feel fairly warm with highs of 19C predicted.

UK weather forecast

Wednesday:

Low cloud and fog soon becoming confined to coasts with a mixture of warm sunny spells and slow-moving thundery downpours. These heaviest across central and southern areas.

Outlook for Thursday to Saturday:

Central and southern areas will have rain on Thursday, locally heavy and thundery. On Friday and Saturday sunny spells and showers are likely, with rain spreading east later on Saturday.
