UK weather: Thunderstorm warning for Greater Manchester as sunny spell set to come to an abrupt end

The sunny spell is set to come to an abrupt end this week with a thunderstorms and heavy rain set to batter Greater Manchester.

A yellow weather alert warning of thunderstorms has been issued by the Met Office.

The warning is in place from 12pm to 9pm this Thursday, with forecasters warning there could be travel disruption and flooding in some places.

Heavy showers will accompany the thunderstorms. There could be 20-30mm of rainfall in the period of an hour and as much as 40-50mm in two to three hours.

The worst of the weather is expected to affect the north of Greater Manchester and some areas may miss the heaviest rain.

Greater Manchester, Cumbria, Lancashire and Blackburn with Darwen are all included in the warning area.

The Met Office website says there is a small chance homes and businesses 'could be flooded quickly, while some building could be damaged by floodwater and lightning strikes.

There is a chance the weather could cause cancellations to train and bus services as well as causing difficult driving conditions.

Power cuts could also occur.

A statement on the Met Office website said: "Heavy showers and thunderstorms are likely to develop during Thursday afternoon across parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England.

"Whilst many areas will miss the heaviest rain, where heavy showers and thunderstorms do develop they will be slow-moving bringing the potential for 20-30 mm of rain in an hour and 40-50 mm in 2-3 hours.

"Showers and thunderstorms will gradually die out during Thursday evening."

Before the stormy weather arrives the region will be treated to fine and dry sunny spells for most of today.

There will be highs of around 20C.

Overnight there could be some outbreaks of patchy light rain and drizzle, with temperatures remaining humid at 13C.

Tomorrow there will be further outbreaks of rain and drizzle, but it will dry up as the day continues.

It will feel warm and humid with temperatures reaching highs of 22C.

The rain is expected to move in on Wednesday, which could be heavy at times.

It will clear overnight and then make a return again on Thursday when there will be heavy, thundery showers.

However, temperatures will still remain warm and humid with highs of 19C to 20C.
