UK Weather: Thunderstorm to rock Britain in washout weekend after the heatwave

Britain will be soaked by heavy thundery rain over weekend - just days after a record-breaking heatwave.

Temperatures plunged to about 20C as the hot weather came to an end - but unlucky travellers were suffering chaos across the UK.

Now yellow warnings for  heavy rainfall cover most of the south-western Scotland and the UK.

They affect London will be in place until Sunday afternoon.

The cloudy and soggy weather conditions felt humid but have turned to heavy, thundery rain in overnight.

Forecasters say heavy rainfall could bring flooding, travel disruption and a slight chance of power cuts with bursts of 20-30mm - which could go up to 100mm in rural areas.

It means it could bring further travel disruption with the likes East Midlands Trains announced its repair work on damaged overhead line equipment.

The Met Office also said massive thunderstorms could strike the UK with 'frequent lightning, hail and gusty winds'.

He added that the rain shifts towards the east over the day and on Sunday, the mercury remains at around the high teens and low 20s.

"Generally temperatures are closer to average than they have been recently," he added.
