UK weather: Thunderstorm threats and rain showers forecast amid sweltering 27C heat blitz

Britain will continue to enjoy the hot conditions of recent weeks despite threats of thunder heading into Tuesday.

The UK has been sweltering under the the baking sunshine but that could be turned on its head with thunderstorms and rain set to descend on the country.

Despite the adverse weather, temperatures are expected to be above average for this time of year with most of the country experiencing low to mid 20s but could get as high as 27C in the south east of England.

Due to the wind direction, northern Scotland will be sweltering, if avoiding the rainfall, with the mercury climbing to 23C or 24C.

Met Officer meteorologist Aidan McGovern said: "Clear spells for eastern Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England. That's where the best of the sunshine will be first thing on Tuesday.

"It doesn't last that long because in the south is quite pushing north across the country. A wet spell for a few hours across the Midlands and Wales as it moves into northern England in the late morning and south east Scotland by the afternoon.

"In its wake, sunny spells, yes, but further showers developing across Wales and the south west [of England] as well as Northern Ireland and western Scotland.

"Again this will be hit and miss, not everyone will catch a shower, but where they do occur could be quite lively with some rumbles of thunder and some hail."

The east coast could be hit by torrential rain and with the rising temperatures as we head into the afternoon, thunderstorms are likely.

Heading into Tuesday night, the rain will clear as the UK enjoys a dry start to the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Met Office 5-day forecast
