UK weather: This week's heatwave could be the last of the summer

Wall to wall sunshine is expected to bake Britain from tomorrow (Thursday) until early next week.

But enjoy the glorious weather while you can because experts are predicting summer might be all but over by mid-August.

The south is likely to reach highs of 32C, before things turn fully Mediterranean on Friday when temperatures could peak at 37C.

And while the Met Office expects the next couple of weeks to see "a good deal of fine and dry weather across the UK", its long range report is fairly ominous.

"Confidence remains fairly low for the last two weeks of August and into early September," the report notes for the period beginning August 19.

Dry periods will be "interspersed with occasional bouts of wetter and windier weather" with potential for some "short-lived very warm spells" but these will be "confined to the south", it adds.

However, in the meantime, Thursday is set to introduce an 'African heat flare' - to sweep over the country, with England baking in temperatures hotter than the Bahamas or Lisbon, by Friday.

And a level two alert, which means that temperatures are expected to reach a certain high on two consecutive days, will be in place from midday on Thursday until 9am on Sunday.

Weather experts say the prolonged hot weather can be "dangerous, especially for the very young or very old or those with chronic disease".

The Bahamas could be 31C on Friday, six shy of the highs expected for England, and Lisbon may peak at around 30C by the weekend.

Although the hot spell is due to last throughout Saturday, the temperature is expected to drop and by Sunday, some parts of the country could see thunderstorms.

Referring to the weather from Thursday, Met Office forecaster Aidan McGivern said: "High pressure builds in across the continent, and we draw up some increasingly hot air from the south and that will be exceptionally hot air on Friday as it arrives into south east England."

Bristol is set to bake in highs of 24C today before peaking at 29C tomorrow.

UK weather forecast

Thursday:

Rather cloudy at first with some drizzle over hills. Most areas brightening up through the day with some sunshine in places. Very warm again in southeast

Outlook for Friday to Sunday:

Rather cloudy with outbreaks of rain, possibly thundery, in the north-west clearing to sunny spells and light winds. Very hot with sunshine in the south-east, probably gradually cooling down later
