UK weather: Temperatures to nosedive as Britain wakes to frost

Temperatures will continue to nosedive today (Tuesday) as Britain's bank holiday heatwave shows no sign of returning.

Large swathes of Britain will wake to a frosty morning as the mercury dips to near freezing overnight.

It comes after temperatures peaked at 25C in Kew Gardens on Sunday, not far off the 25.3C Easter Sunday record set in Solent, Hampshire, on April 24 2011.

BBC Weather forecaster Sarah Keith-Lucas said temperatures would drop significantly tonight as well.

She told the Express : "The winds will fall lighter and skies are clear so it is dry, cold and frosty.

"Temperatures even in our towns and cities getting a little below freezing and it is going to get even colder than that in the countryside.

"So certainly expect a touch of frost first thing Tuesday as we are looking at another dry settled day with a bit more cloud for the northwest of Scotland.

"There will be lighter winds on Tuesday than we have today although temperatures still not great.

"It will be around 10 to 14 degrees but not quite as chilly along that east coast."

Bristol will enjoy another day of wall-to-wall sunshine throughout Tuesday, with highs of 12C.

UK forecast

Tuesday:

Most areas fine and dry again. Parts of eastern, southeastern and central England will start off cloudier before brightening up whilst the far north of Scotland will be mostly cloudy.

Outlook for Wednesday to Friday:

Sunny for many on Wednesday, cloudier with patchy rain over northern Scotland. Cloudier with showery rain across southern and southwestern areas Thursday and Friday. Mainly dry with sunny spells elsewhere.
