UK weather: Temperatures to hit 23C as Brits enjoy bank holiday sun before rain

Brits are set for a sunny end to the bank holiday weekend as majority of the country basks in sunshine with temperatures hitting 23C.

Saturday proved to be a balmy with highs of 25C in some parts of the country and it will be a similar theme across the Bank Holiday weekend, although the temperatures may struggle to match those peaks.

The sustained weather is due to high pressure covering across the UK but most will have sunny and bright intervals on Sunday, particularly in England and Wales where temperatures are set to reach as high as 23C in some places.

In Northern Ireland and Scotland, there could be isolated showers but should be dry for the majority with the temperature hoping to reach 20C.

Met Office forecaster Jonathan Vautrey said: "The settled weather is all thanks to high pressure that's spreading itself across the country. Sunny spells as we move into Sunday and it will be another widely fine day and a pleasant one to get out and about.

"Some brightness coming through as well for Northern Ireland, still with a risk of an isolated shower. The patchy rain also continuing for north-west Scotland, although areas further east generally staying drier.

"When you are in the sunshine, it will feel warm once again with highs in the mid-20s across England and Wales, but high teens if not pushing towards 20 degrees for Northern Ireland and Scotland."

Tonight will be similar to the day with the country staying dry apart from some parts in Scotland, although winds will pick up throughout the night in southern and eastern England due to the "repositioning of the high-pressure centre".

Mr Vautrey continued: "We keep a similar theme throughout Sunday evening with many areas staying largely dry away from north-west Scotland, but the winds will begin to pick up through the channel and across the southern coastlines.

"This is due to the repositioning of the high-pressure centre and the squeeze in the isobars. The north-easterly breeze that develops will also push cloud into eastern locations."

Bank Holiday Monday in England will see more of the same as Sunday albeit slightly cooler temperatures, reaching highs of around 23C in the south. Northern Scotland may develop spots of rain as the day goes on.

"As we move into Bank Holiday Monday for Northern Ireland, Wales and England it will turn a bit cooler in the east whereas the sunshine and highest temperatures will prevail further west," Vautrey concluded.

It is a mixed bag for the rest of the week, with cloud cover and sporadic showers set to hit the east.

UK forecast for the next 5 days

Today:

Sunny or bright intervals for most. A few light showers developing over north England and Wales but most places staying dry. Cloudier in the north and northwest with a possibly a little rain and a few heavier showers.

Monday:
