UK weather: Temperatures set to rise rapidly as Britain heads for mini heatweave

Britain is braced for the mercury to soar this weekend as the country basks in a mini-Spring heatwave.

It's been bitterly-cold this week with overnight conditions in some areas dipping below freezing producing overnight frosts.

And, a low-pressure system in the north of the country is still expected to see the mercury tumble across Britain on Thursday and Friday - increasing the risk of wintry conditions in northerly areas.

But warmer air will quickly sweep across southerly and easterly parts of the country this weekend, with temperatures nearing the 20C mark on Sunday, reports the Express.

Posting on Twitter, BBC Weather forecaster, Matt Taylor, said: “Another shot of cold air comes on Thursday into Friday as a deep low passes to the north.

“Then, a shift in wind direction gradually brings milder air through the weekend.”

While Nicky Maxie, a meteorologist at the Exeter based Met Office, told Plymouth Live : "If you're in the South East, you're going to see clear skies and dry and sunny weather - and you could see 20C in London.

"In the west of the UK, there will be variable amounts of cloud. Bristol could sneak a 20C, but it will depend on the amount of the cloud. The South West is not going to have a bad day [on Sunday] - but variable amounts of cloud will take the edge of the temperature. We're looking at a fairly warm day and could see some sunshine.

"So talk of 20C temperatures is not wrong, because there's chance of seeing 20C in the South East - but it will be more in the mid teens in the South West."

Residents in Bristol should wake up to a dry and cloudy start, with highs of around 9C. By the afternoon showers could move in, with 50 per cent chance of rain at 4pm. Throughout the day the mercury will peak at 11C.

UK weather forecast

Thursday:

A band of patchy rain and drizzle will move slowly southwards across England and Wales. Much colder in the north with severe gales and wintry showers for northern Scotland.

Outlook for Friday to Sunday:

Cold and windy with snow showers across the far north Friday. Elsewhere, mainly dry with variable cloud. Strong winds and rain reach the west Sunday; mainly dry and warm elsewhere.
