UK weather: Temperatures set to drop to -9C as icy blast from Greenland hits

Today (March 3) will be a short respite from last week's severe weather before another icy blast hits.

Most of the country should bask in sunshine as temperatures peak at 9C in the south.

But enjoy the nice weather while you can because by Wednesday rain clouds will have returned, lashing the UK with persistent showers.

Some 3,300 properties have been flooded as three named storms hit the UK over three consecutive weekends.

And now experts are saying more rain and snow are going to hit this month.

Met Office national morning forecast for March 3 - chilly start

Former BBC and Met Office forecaster John Hammond of weathertrending told the Mirror : “March comes ‘like in a lion’ and the lion is already roaring. There’s no let-up in winter as spring arrives.

“More rain and snow ahead will prolong the agony for those blighted by flooding. Northern areas and high ground further south are most prone to snow.”

The Met Office said the south and midlands face snow flurries on higher ground from today and through the week, with snow at lower levels in northern England and Scotland.

Nights are set to be close to the coldest of winter for England and Scotland until Wednesday morning, forecasters are predicting.

Lows down to -9C are due in Scotland, -6C in northern England and -4C in the south, the Met Office said, while ice is expected, with daytime highs of just 5-9C until Thursday.

And heavy downpours are set to cause more flooding on Thursday, when gale of up to 60mphe are predicted.

In Bristol, residents will wake to a dry and sunny start with highs of 9C expected by lunchtime.
